Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah was born at the Mangga Tunggal Palace, in Pekan, Pahang on 24 October 1930. He received his early education at the Malay School in Pekan and later at the Kuala Kangsar Malay College. However, his education was interrupted by World War II. Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah also studied the Japanese language during the Japanese occupation.

In 1944, at the age of 14, Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah was appointed the Tengku Mahkota (Crown Prince) of Pahang. When the war ended, he continued his studies at Clifford School in Kuala Lipis and stayed with the common people at the school’s hostel. He later furthered his studies at the Malay College.

In 1948, Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah pursued his higher education in Public Administration at Worcester College, Oxford. He also enrolled at University College, Exeter, Devon for a course in Local Government. While undergoing this course, he did practical training at the Urban District Council in Sidmouth for three years.

At the age of 35, Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah served as the Chief Officer of the 12th Infantry Battalion of the Territorial Army based at the Batu 5 Camp, Mentakab. His service in the army and to the public, made him a person admired by the people who described him as a people’s prince who was always concerned about their well-being. The Crown Prince loved outdoor activities especially sports in which he was very good at. He is well-known in the country and abroad as an excellent polo player.

In 1982, Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah was awarded the International Olympic Football Award. He is the only Malaysian awarded this prestigious award. Football, a world-class sport was given a new lease of life when Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah was elected President of the Football Association of Malaysia. Under his leadership, Malaysia succeeded in regaining the Merdeka Cup after 9 years, by defeating South Korea 3–1 in additional time on 17 February 1993. Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah, the country’s number one sports fan, has been the President of the Football Association of Malaysia since 1984 and the President of the Asian Football Federation. Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah also likes polo, hockey, badminton and golf. Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah attended the Olympic Games in Los Angeles, Seoul, Barcelona and Atlanta.

Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah was appointed the 5th Sultan of Pahang on 7 May 1974, following the demise of his father HRH Sultan Abu Bakar and was installed on May 6, 1975. Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah, who was elected the 7th Yang di-Pertuan Agong, ruled the country from 26 April 1979 until 25 April 1984.

Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah married Tengku Hajah Afzan binti Tengku Muhammad on 22 April 1954. The royal couple have seven children, two boys and five girls. After the demise of Tengku Afzan on 29 June 1988, Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah married HRH Sultanah Hajah Kalsom on 14 March 1991 who gave birth to a son.

Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah has been the Constitutional Head of the International Islamic University Malaysia since February 1983.

Sultan Ahmad Shah sebak terkenang Tengku Afzan



Sultan Ahmad Shah menatap gambar Allahyarhamah isteri baginda, Tengku Ampuan Afzan pada sambutan jubli perak SMKA TAHAP di Jerantut semalam.

JERANTUT - Sultan Pahang Sultan Ahmad Shah tidak dapat menahan kesedihan baginda ketika bertitah merasmikan sambutan Jubli Perak Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Agama Tengku Ampuan Hajjah Afzan Pahang (SMKA TAHAP) di sini semalam.

Baginda mula kelihatan sebak sebaik saja bertitah mengenai nama sekolah berkenaan yang diambil sempena nama Allahyarhamah isteri baginda, Tengku Afzan Tengku Panglima Perang Muhammad.

"Seribu makna buat saya sebab sekolah ini mengambil nama sempena nama Tengku Ampuan Afzan, isteri saya yang dikasihi," titah baginda.

Sebaik saja menitahkan ayat tersebut, Sultan Ahmad Shah berhenti seketika dan mendiamkan diri sambil menundukkan kepalanya sebelum kedengaran esakan kecil disusuli dengan genangan air mata di kelopak mata baginda.

Keadaan itu berlarutan lebih kurang seminit, menyebabkan hadirin dalam dewan sekolah turut hiba seolah-olah memahami kerinduan baginda kepada Allahyarhamah isterinya yang mangkat pada tahun 1988 itu. - Bernama

melalui paparan Majalah 3 pada malam 23/10/2010
- Tuanku Sultan juga meminati bidang penternakan,pertanian...terkini ada buat satu kandang untuk pelihara lembu dan ada kebun untuk bertanam...
